Background:Robert McCallion, born on 9th August, 1979, came from Park Road, Swinford, Co. Mayo. The son of a Garda he worked with Corrib Oil before joining An Garda Síochána on 7th February, 2005, thus following a family tradition as his brother, uncles and cousin also served in An Garda Síochána. Robert took a particular interest in his local GAA club in Swinford. He played underage Gaelic football with Mayo and made an appearance for the senior team. He was single. 

Circumstances:

On the morning of 26th March, 2009, Garda Robert McCallion and two other colleagues, while on duty, responded to a call at Tara Court, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal. While dealing with the situation the Gardai observed a car approaching at speed. Garda McCallion was struck by the vehicle and sustained serious injuries.  He was conveyed to Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, where, on 7th April, 2009, he died from his injuries.
