Background:
Michael Lawless, born on 6th May, 1951, came from Carrowkeel, Kiltulla, Athenry, Co. Galway. Prior to joining An Garda Síochána on 2nd September, 1970, he served in the F.C.A. He was married with nine children. Garda Lawless took an active role in the Garda Representative Association (GRA) and was a member of the Central Executive Committee for Donegal since 1984. Garda Lawless served at Bundoran prior to his death, but during his career also served at Cobh, Castlefin, Ballybofey, Letterkenny and Ballyshannon.

Circumstances:

On 20th January, 1993, Garda Lawless was travelling from his home in Ballyshannon to Dublin for a meeting of the Central Executive Committee of the Garda Representative Association. On the outskirts of Cliffoney, Co. Sligo, his vehicle was involved in a collision with an oncoming vehicle and he died at the scene.
