Background:
Michael Joyce, born on 26th November, 1905, came from Knockillaree, Oughterard, Co. Galway. He joined An Garda Síochána on 19th February, 1925. Promoted Sergeant on 27th March, 1939, he also served at Leighlinbridge, College, Kevin Street, Roscarberry, Lorrha, Beaufort, and Rossport. Sergeant Joyce was married with one child, who pre-deceased him.

Circumstances:

On 21st December, 1967, Sergeant Joyce and a colleague were travelling in an official patrol car to the customs post at Carrickarnon, Co. Louth to take charge of a prisoner who was the subject of extradition proceedings. Near Balrothery, Balbriggan, Co. Dublin their patrol car was involved in a collision with another vehicle. Sergeant Joyce died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident.
