Background:
Thomas Griffin, born on 12th April, 1899, came from 2, St. Patrick’s Terrace, Greenmount, Cork city. Formerly a mechanical engineer, he joined An Garda Síochána on 26th April, 1922. He saw military service as N.C.O., I/C Engineers, ‘C’ Coy, 2nd Battalion, 1st Cork Brigade. Promoted Sergeant on 16th October, 1922, Sergeant Griffin, who was single also served in Kilkenny.

Circumstances:

On 6th May, 1924, Sergeant Griffin, with his colleague Garda John Murrin, were investigating a shooting incident which had occurred the previous day. Having identified the suspects for the crime, both Sergeant Griffin and Garda Murrin proceeded to a house at nearby Killonerry, Co. Kilkenny. On arrival and without warning, both Gardai were shot and seriously injured. Sergeant Griffin died from his injuries on 7th May, 1924.
