Background:
Patrick Forde, born on 19th January, 1904, came from Nutgrove, Tynagh, Loughrea, Co. Galway. Having previously worked in farming he joined An Garda Síochána on 27th June, 1924. He served in the Volunteers (1919-1921). Promoted on 1st March, 1927, Sergeant Forde, married with two children, also served at Ballymote, Mohill, Fivemilebourne & Barnaderg.

Circumstances:

On 18th January, 1934, Sergeant Forde, with Garda Michael Kennelly, were returning to Maam Garda Station after escorting a female patient to Ballinasloe Mental Hospital. On driving through Galway the hackney car in which they were travelling approached the Woodquay area. It was a dark wet night.  The vehicle left the roadway and entered the River Corrib at Woodquay. Sergeant Forde was drowned.
