Background:
John Fitzsimons, born on 8th August, 1929, came from Drumbran, Cloverhill, Redhills, Co. Cavan. Having previously worked as a signalman on the Great Northern Railway he joined An Garda Síochána on 12th November, 1953. He served in the FCA (1946-1953). Promoted Sergeant on 4th February, 1959, he also served at Kildare, Naas, Celbridge, Ballon and Glenfarne. Sergeant Fitzsimons was married with two children.

Circumstances:

 At 8.50 pm. on 15th March, 1963, Sergeant Fitzsimons was investigating a road traffic accident at Hybla, Monasterevin when he was knocked down by a passing vehicle, sustaining serious injuries. He was removed to Naas County Hospital where he died from his injuries at 11.30 pm on 16th March, 1963.
