Background:


David Dowd, born on 7th April, 1962, came from Aughavadden, Newtowncashel, Co. Longford. A student, he joined An Garda Síochána on 5th July, 1982. On completion of training he was allocated to Raheny Garda Station. His spare-time activities included Gaelic football, soccer, rugby, basketball and fishing.

Circumstances:

At 10.30 pm on 18th February, 1989 two youths were observed on a garage roof at 337, Sutton Park, Dublin 13. On being informed of the incident a number of Garda patrol cars went to the scene. Garda David Dowd was one of a number of Gardai who responded to the intruder call and took up a position along the DART line at the rear of the house. A DART train approached from behind Garda Dowd and three colleagues who accompanied him. One of the colleagues saw the train and shouted at him to get out of the way – the train almost simultaneously hit Garda Dowd. He was conveyed from the scene by ambulance to the Mater Hospital arriving at 11.10pm. He was subsequently transferred to Beaumont Hospital where he died from his injuries at 2.00 am on 19th February, 1989.
