Background:
Desmond Dixon, born on 22nd December, 1960, came from Howth Road, Raheny, Dublin, 5. He joined An Garda Síochána on 2nd March, 1983, having previously worked as a bus conductor. Prior to becoming a Garda he served for a period in the F.C.A. He had a keen interest in academic study, obtaining a Degree through part-time education. Detective Garda Dixon, a married man with three children, also served at Store Street, Clontarf and Howth. His spare-time activities included golf and music.

Circumstances:

At 7.25 p.m. on the evening of 15th November, 2001, Detective Garda Des Dixon was on duty driving an official unmarked Garda car at Southern Link Road, Dundalk, Co. Louth.  The patrol car was struck by an oncoming vehicle travelling on the wrong side of the dual carriageway. Detective Garda Dixon was removed from the scene and taken to the Louth County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
