Background:
Andrew John Callanan (AJ) (Andy), born on 8th January, 1963, came from Cathedral Street, Thurles, Co. Tipperary. On 13th April, 1982 he joined An Garda Síochána. On completion of training he was assigned to Tallaght. He was promoted Sergeant on 6th January, 1992 and served at Portlaw for a short time. A married man with three children, Sergeant Andrew Callanan was posthumously awarded the Scott Gold Medal on 6th July, 2000.

Circumstances:

In the early hours of the morning of 21st July, 1999 a man entered the entrance hall of Tallaght Garda Station and poured petrol over himself. Sergeant Callanan made an attempt to disarm the man. The man then aimed the petrol at Sergeant Callanan, setting it alight, as a result of which Sergeant Callanan died from the injuries received.
