New Firearms Licensing Regulations
As 21st October 2009, the Garda Commissioner has decided to allow those who have been issued with an Extension Letter for their existing firearm certificate to substitute their existing Firearm for a new Firearm. This will be on a like for like basis for the duration of their extension period only. This only refers to non-restricted shotguns and rifles.
Please note that the Commissioners Guidelines on Firearms Licensing have been amended accordingly.
Section 28 of the Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2009 which was commenced on the 27th July 2009 provides for a transition period where existing firearm certificates due to fall for renewal on the 31st July 2009 will have their durations extended for periods of up to 12 months (a minimum period of 3 months and a maximum period of 12 months). All firearm certificate holders will receive a letter from the Garda Commissioner informing them of their extension and the timeframe of when they can re-apply for a firearm certificate under the new legislation.
