Excellent People Delivering Policing Excellence
The Human Resource Management (HRM) section has a vital role in An Garda Síochána in the recruitment and deployment of Garda staff, the key resource of any policing service.
Some 70 personnel manage the HR needs of more than 13,600 Garda Members. In a rapidly changing HR environment the pressures to modernise and to increase capacity is ever present. Significant challenges in recent years include:
- The introduction of the Garda Reserve
- Civilianisation
- A more complex legal and technical workload
Chief Superintendent John Grogan heads up the HR Management Team which is led by experienced and accredited professionals. Given the developmental role of Human Resources in modern organisations, the Team’s staff profile is constantly evolving in order to meet the challenges posed by a rapidly changing and increasingly technical working environment. A key aspect of this process is the integrated use of both Garda and Civilian staff with crucial business skills knowledge and relevant HR and management qualifications.
An Garda Síochána’s vision Excellent People Delivering Policing Excellence begins with effective recruitment. The process is then continued through:
- Allocation
- Specialist appointment
- Appraisal
- Promotion
Garda HRM is constantly evolving through the development of a progressive HR Strategy and the increased use of technology and qualified professional staff.
