Visit of Garda Commissioner Noirín O'Sullivan
To the Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland, Clonkeagh, Dublin 14
On the 13th July 2016, Garda Commissioner Noírin O'Sullivan visited the Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland, Clonskeagh, Dublin 14 and met with Dr. Noah Al-Kadoo, Sheikh Hussein Halawa, Mr. Shaheen Ahmed; Mr. Ahmed Hussein and Ms. Summayah Kenna. Also in attendance were: Assistant Commissioner Michael O'Sullivan, Chief Superintendent Karl Heller (Community Relations), Sergeant Dave McInerney (GRIDO), Sergeant Dave Delaney (Commissioner's Office) and Garda Darren Coventry-Howlett (GRIDO). On conclusion of official business, the attendees were invited to visit the main Mosque, where a cultural and religious awareness exercise took place.
Commissioner Noirín O'Sullivan reinforced An Garda Síochána's commitment to developing relations with Ireland's Muslim community. She thanked the meeting for the close co-operation with An Garda Síochána in advising on cultural and religious protocols pertaining to the Muslim community since 2001. She emphasised the fact that the role of the Garda Racial, Intercultural and Diversity Office was to liaise with minority communities and reassure them of the Garda services available without discrimination at national level. She reminded the meeting of the importance of the role of Garda Ethnic Liaison Officers who are based at local level and work closely with minority communities, their role being to build trust and confidence with minority communities. She acknowledged the vulnerability pertaining to the Muslim community in particular due to the propensity for hate crime and Islamophobia, and pledged full support in the prevention and detection of any such crime committed against members of the Muslim community.
